World Digital Detox Day

In 2015, long before “screen addiction” became a global crisis, ZEP Foundation, under the leadership of Dr. Rekha Chaudhari, sowed the seeds of what would become the world’s largest grassroots movement for digital wellness. This vision gave rise to World Digital Detox Day (WDDD)—a powerful initiative advocating mindful technology use, emotional health, and smartphone-free childhoods.

Celebrated Annually on 10th December

WDDD is observed every year on 10 December, now recognized in 72+ countries and supported by schools, health experts, families, wellness leaders, and government bodies. It’s not a campaign of restriction—it’s a celebration of balance, encouraging people to unplug and reconnect with themselves, their families, and nature.

National Impact:

  • Over 500,000 students took the Digital Wellness Oath, committing to disciplined screen habits and digital empathy
  • 2+ lakh letters handwritten by school and university students to Prime Minister Modi, urging that digital wellness be made a national priority
  • Over 500,000 students took the Digital Wellness Oath, committing to disciplined screen habits and digital empathy

Government & Supreme Court Support:

  • WDDD is supported by India’s Ministry of Education, Ministry of Tourism, and Ministry of Women & Child Development
  • In 2024, ZEP Foundation filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India demanding age-based regulation of social media for children. The court responded with a directive to the government within eight weeks—a landmark win in digital child protection

Celebrated at National Icons (Correction):

  • Gateway of India: Celebrated WDDD (not GWD) on 10 December
  • Mantralaya: Hosted WDDD with digital wellness exhibitions
  • Raj Bhavan: Recognized WDDD through awards and student-led initiatives

Digital Wellness Curriculum (Age 4–18):

ZEP Foundation has introduced the world’s first structured digital detox curriculum, divided by age groups:

  • Ages 4–7: Storytelling and emotional play-based learning
  • Ages 8–12: Interactive games and peer workshops
  • Ages 13–18: Digital identity, focus training, ethical screen use

An upcoming book titled Digital Detox for Children aims to embed tech balance into early childhood education. This is ZEP’s fourth publication, designed for children aged 4–7, teaching self-regulation through stories and guided values.

Digital Wellness Awards:

To recognize changemakers, educators, and youth leaders promoting this mission, ZEP launched the Digital Wellness Awards—India’s first platform for honoring those creating healthy digital ecosystems.

Research Publication:

ZEP Foundation’s second major research release (after Mother’s Touch) is on Digital Fasting & Detox—exploring screen behavior, emotional resilience, and the neuro-psychological impacts of device addiction.

WDDD has now become more than a campaign. It is a global educational movement, a legal advocacy platform, and a community-led mission to bring back the art of living mindfully and humanly in the digital age
