Freedom from Screens: Learning Beyond the Digital

Dada Patil Mahavidyalaya, Karjat marks Independence Day through reading, reflection, participation and meaningful human connection

At Dada Patil Mahavidyalaya, Karjat, Independence Day became an opportunity to reflect on a different kind of freedom—the freedom to step away from screens and reconnect with learning, people and the world around us.

In association with WDDD – ZEP Foundation, students participated in a meaningful programme that placed books, discussion and active participation at the centre of the celebration.

Students engaged in reading, followed by questions and discussion, turning the experience into an opportunity for reflection, learning and communication. The programme also included flag hoisting and an NCC parade, bringing together academic engagement, discipline and community participation.

The initiative demonstrates how the principles of Digital Balance, Human Connection can be translated into practical experiences within educational institutions. Rather than viewing digital wellbeing simply as reducing screen time, the programme created opportunities for students to experience what becomes possible when attention is redirected towards reading, dialogue, participation and shared experiences.

WDDD appreciates Principal Dr. Sanjay Nagarkar, the faculty and students of Dada Patil Mahavidyalaya for continuing to turn digital-wellness principles into meaningful action on campus.

Their initiative offers an encouraging example for educational institutions everywhere: digital balance is not only about putting the phone away—it is about making room for something meaningful to take its place.
